Florence Helena McGillivray
Canadian, 1864 - 1938
BiographyFlorence Helena McGillivray was a prolific Canadian artist recognized in her lifetime primarily for her landscape paintings, which can be found at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the National Gallery of Canada. In addition to painting on canvas, McGillivray also painted on porcelain blanks in a process known colloquially in her time as “china painting.” McGillivray went to New York City in the early 1900s to study china painting under Marshall Fry, a leading teacher and writer on the subject. Despite efforts to reinsert McGillivray into the history of Canadian landscape painting, her work decorating porcelain remains understudied.
