DescriptionFrom the sale record: Justus Morton established Brantford's first stoneware pottery in 1849. He ran his pottery in Brantford Canada West from 1849-1856. He must have done a good business, because many of his crocks line colelctors shelves today. Most Morton and Co stoneware is decorated with a simple flower design. This remarkable face is something exceptional for Morton and very rare for Canadian stoneware generally. The face design is centred in a floral frame. The expression is wry with just a hint of a smile. The design is well rendered in rich blue glaze. This small one gallon jug is 11 1/4" tall. There is a crack through the handle and a second hairline that runs around two thirds of the neck. A rare and important piece of Canadian stoneware. One of the best we have offered.
