DescriptionThe artist behind the stylized crocuses that decorate this jug was no stranger to depicting Canadian flora. Florence Helena McGillivray was a prolific Canadian artist renowned for her landscape paintings. Less studied, or collected, are McGillivray’s ceramic works. McGillivray created her ceramics by decorating porcelain blanks in a process known as a china painting. A popular activity among Canadian middle and upper-class women at the time, china painting was also seen as an avenue to generate income independently. Although McGillivray supplemented her own income by teaching art, she may have seen china painting as another revenue stream. It is also possible that these works remained personal: other known pieces of McGillivray’s china painting include a portrait of her mother on a porcelain tile and bracelet kept by her sister.
