DescriptionThe soft blue and white relief of this teapot intentionally recalls Jasper ware, a type of ceramic developed in the 1700s by Wedgwood, an important English manufactory. The designer, George Emery, had apprenticed at Wedgwood before immigrating to Canada. Once here, he founded Ecanada Art Pottery in Hamilton, Ontario to reproduce the storied ware using imported white clay from England and the United States. The foreign material takes on a decidedly “Canadian” identity by depicting a twisted pine tree, part of the national iconography following the wide promotion of paintings by the Group of Seven in Canada from the 1920s to the 1970s.
