Description“Mao Tse Toad” is a major work by Gilhooly produced while he was resident in Toronto. The work depicts Mao Tse Dong as a frog character, in line with Gilhooly’s many evocations of his “frog world,” in which frog figures take on anthropomorphic attributes. Gilhooly made the work in three parts, being entirely hand modeled and glazed (rather than produced from molds) in the form of an over-sized bust on a stand. The bust is glazed somewhat naturalistically, while the stand is a loose approximation of Chinese blue and white
