DescriptionIn 1991 Low-Beer embarked on a new direction, focusing on the full-size figure and working in multiples, with the installation of nine totemic sculptures entitled Still Dances. Still Dances V is from this original series and reveals the characteristic intense gaze and frozen gestures of a fragmented figure comprising clay body and facial parts in different sizes and weights. Stacked on a metal post and top-heavy, it creates the appearance of precariousness. This work references ancient Greek Cycladic sculpture, Romanesque poses of mother and child and other historical representations of women, underscoring objectification while simultaneously emphasizing the diversity of the body and the self.
