This egg cup is decorated in underglaze blue in imitation of Chinese porcelain, which is one of the factory’s hallmark styles. However, painters often applied the colour scheme to European ornaments and motifs – for instance the scrollwork and lambrequin designs seen on this piece were inspired by the designs of Jean Berain I. The piece also shows the influence of silver on porcelain; in this case the moulded ribs decorating the egg cup were most probably inspired by French silver examples.</schema:description><schema:artForm>European Ceramics</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://emuseum.gardinermuseum.com/objects/7922/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>https://emuseum.gardinermuseum.com/internal/media/dispatcher/24304/full</schema:image><schema:name>Footed Stand and Four Cups for Ice Cream</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1770</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory]</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Soft-paste porcelain with overglaze enamels, gilding</schema:artMedium><schema:description>This set of matching handled cups presented on a stand and finely decorated with garlands of flowers would have been used to serve ice cream, the most fashionable dessert of the period. Sèvres responded to this fashion, and frequently included ice cream cups in dessert services from the 1760s onward. The shape of these cups is specifically illustrated in M. Emy’s book on how to make ice cream, L’Art de bien faire des glaces d’Office… (1768), the first single-subject cookbook published in France. Two serving cups are missing from the original set which would have included six cups; nevertheless, the surviving pieces make a cohesive display that can be used to document this fashion.</schema:description><schema:artForm>European
