Two youthful protagonists on the base are playing ball with each other while being observed by a third person with a painted black face, The large rubber ball is seen against a stepped structure which probably represents one side of the court. The figures wear the standard ballgame equipment: an enormous and probably cumbersome protective belt; a knee pad on one leg; and a protective binding on the wrists.

According to Michael Coe, it may be that the two figures are the Hero Twins, Hunahpu and Xbalanque, and that their respective deer and feather headdresses are distinguishing features of each as supernatural ball-players. The third figure probably represents one of the Lords of the Underworld.

The glyph band below the rim is the Primary Standard Sequence.

There are four distinct iconographic forms of the Bearded Dragon on this vessel, each band represents one form. The four representations indicate the four cardinal directions of the world. Also the Bearded Dragon is the same creature who appears on the so-called Ceremonial Bar of Maya stelae, held by rulers as a royal symbol. Original mint green stucco band at the rim and base of vessel. The feet are hollow and round and contain rattles. There are similar rattles on the sides of the vase. An incised chevron band near the base completes the object.</schema:description><schema:artForm>Ancestral Abiayala</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://emuseum.gardinermuseum.com/objects/403/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>https://emuseum.gardinermuseum.com/internal/media/dispatcher/17518/full</schema:image><schema:name>Cylindrical Tripod Vase with Portrait Head</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>350-550</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Maya artist(s)]</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Earthenware</schema:artMedium><schema:description>Maya orange-ware cylindrical tripod vessel, Early Classic period, with lid and portrait head of ruler with fish and water-lily headdress serving as a handle.
