The work is a large-scale bowl form, which Higby has altered to be oval in form. He has then cut the rim and applied glazes to suggest a landscape, one that forms across the open center of the hollow form. This is a technique Higby pioneered in the late 1970s that contributed to the rise of the sculptural vessel at the time. The work is raku fired, an unpredictable technique which Higby has harnessed masterfully to express the tension between the actual space occupied by the object and the implied space of the austere landscape represented on it."},"medium":{"label":"Medium","value":"Raku-fired earthenware"},"onview":{"label":"On View","value":"0"},"media":{"label":"Media","value":[{"mediaRenditionNumber":"G18.8.1 mark","publicAccess":"true","mediaImageURL":"https://emuseum.gardinermuseum.com/internal/media/dispatcher/19602/full","rank":"0","pixelHeight":"2400","pixelWidth":"3000","mediaID":"19602"},{"mediaRenditionNumber":"G18.8.1","publicAccess":"true","mediaImageURL":"https://emuseum.gardinermuseum.com/internal/media/dispatcher/19603/full","rank":"0","pixelHeight":"2400","pixelWidth":"3000","mediaID":"19603"},{"mediaRenditionNumber":"G18.8.1 view 2","publicAccess":"true","mediaImageURL":"https://emuseum.gardinermuseum.com/internal/media/dispatcher/19601/full","rank":"0","pixelHeight":"2400","pixelWidth":"3000","mediaID":"19601"}]},"title":{"label":"Title","value":"Oval Landscape Bowl"},"classification":{"label":"Classifications","value":"Modern and Contemporary Ceramics"},"people":{"label":"Artist / Maker","value":"Wayne Higby"},"rels":{"label":"Relations","value":"[]"},"subclassification2":{"label":"Sub-classification 2","value":""},"primaryMedia":{"value":"https://emuseum.gardinermuseum.com/internal/media/dispatcher/19603/full"},"subclassification3":{"label":"Sub-classification 3","value":""},"collections":{"label":"Collections","value":["Modern and Contemporary Ceramics","Modern and Contemporary - American","2018-2019 New Acquisitions"]},"culture":{"label":"Culture","value":"American"},"displayDate":{"label":"Date","value":"ca. 1990"},"id":{"label":"Id","value":"181466"},"dimensions":{"label":"Dimensions","value":"Overall: 27.9 × 55.9 × 35.6 cm (11 × 22 × 14 in.)"}}]}
