Inspired by the crocus blossom - both in the vessel’s shape and in its high-temperature shades of color - Hentschel designed the déjeuner along the lines of the floral art nouveau. The design was exhibited at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900; with more than 25 sets sold, it was considered a great success. Between 1902 and 1904, Hentschel expanded the breakfast service into a larger dinner and tea service. The handle is moulded with bulrushes, and white swans symbolizing rivers, while at the base is a mask of Poseidon. The design is a prime example of Victorian revivalism in the neo-classical style. The jug was moulded in two parts including the handle, requiring no additional finishing, and illustrates the sophisticated manufacturing technology in nineteenth-century Staffordshire. The invention of relief-moulded stonewares forced many British china makers and decorators to emigrate because demand for their skill was diminishing. Relief-moulded jugs of the 1840s, also known as ‘fancy jugs,’ were used for water, mulled wine, ale and milk and came in four sizes in multiple colours with and without lids. Dresser likely based the form of this work on a double-spout and bridge vessel made by the Nasca people in Southern Peru, which he could have seen in either the British Museum or the South Kensington Museum (now the Victoria & Albert). Dresser’s rendering of a face on the front of the vessel is possibly a reference to the figurative imagery on Nasca ceramics (see G83.1.185 and G83.1.180). The distinctive colouration at the top of the vessel is a credit to Dresser’s collaboration with artist Henry Tooth (1842 – 1918).
