These pieces fall into the broad category of the little trinkets, toys, and small objects that were made of porcelain; these include cane handles, scent bottles, elements for games, or little boxes for snuff or candy. As such, they express the range of functional items that would have been used in the private sphere and in a sociable context. Each piece features bunches of flowers tied with differently coloured ribbons, framed by green-ground rims with a decorative frieze in tooled and burnished gold. A band in burnished gold run around the rim of all the pieces. Suspension holes are pierced in the plates (as is the case with other plates of the service). The plates belong to a green ground dessert and dinner service of which 162 pieces are preserved in the Royal Collections, London. The service was partly recorded in 1826 in the Confectionary, Cartlon House. The exact date of acquisition of the service by George IV is unknown. Of significant provenance, the four plates will therefore enhance our currently limited holdings of Sèvres by documenting the production of green grounds as well as production of the late eighteenth century under the French Republic. He wears a ruffled shirt and a white waistcoat, with many tiny buttons reaching his collar. His loose britches are tied at the knee with yellow garters and ribbons. Puce shoes are also tied with yellow ribbons. The overall colour scheme is of very pale green, yellow and a rose-puce. Decoration has been painted with an exceptionally light hand, giving a feeling of delicacy and grace.
