DescriptionNevers first produced objects intended for display, such as this pair of monumental vases, before turning to utilitarian objects. The rope handles and the decoration combining blue and manganese (a purplish brown) are characteristic stylistic features of the centre. A close look at the two vases reveal the painter’s working method: each shows the same group of two figures with one of them holding a fan, thus pointing to the use of poncifs. Poncifs are drawings with
pinholes following the outlines of the composition. They were laid over the piece and charcoal was dusted through the holes to transfer the design.
